About Me
Emma Mella (b. 2004, Shenzhen) is an artist, writer, and independent researcher working across languages and media, with a particular attention to the visual. Their approaches are not limited to symbols, words, and sounds, but also explore the translinguistic essence in between mediums. Mella’s practice expands from writing to sculpture and mixed-media installation. Their experience as an artist in New York City and their mixed cultural background inform their approach to research on contemporary culture and international conditions.
Mella holds a BFA in Studio Art (double minors in Sociology and Mathematics) from New York University, and conducts independent research on language topology, multilingual narrative forms, and the nature of language. Their work reflects a sustained engagement with the humanities and interdisciplinary inquiry. They are currently based in Norwich, England, pursuing an MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia, with a focus on creative-critical writing, cross-genre writing, and the speculative novel.
Artist Statement
Since the inception of the cosmos, existence has been defined by movement. Life on Earth emerged from this primordial flux; humans, in turn, began their trajectory on the African continent, weaving a history defined by migrations across land and sea.
Before the construct of the ‘nation-state,’ all beings drifted across the Earth with a primal fluidity. Today, movement persists but is governed by ‘stricter’ parameters. While motion is an inevitable cosmic pattern, human definitions often transmute it into a mechanism for exploitation, even within our purportedly ‘post-colonial’ era.
Mella’s work challenges inherited social presumptions, interrogating how perception is conditioned and manipulated through language, ‘common sense,’ and institutional narratives. They focus on how writing performs as a medium that converges with materiality, interacting with ink, fibers, or digital screens. By exploring the sculptural potential of language, Mella investigates how materiality assists in conveying ideas through the delicate, physical interaction between the viewer and the proposition.
